From 10 to 12 May 2012 the University of Cagliari will host the Seventh International Conference on Informatics and Urban and Regional Planning (INPUT 2012), organized by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Architecture (Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile, Ambientale e Architettura) of the University of Cagliari and by the Department of Agriculture (Dipartimento di Agraria) of the University of Sassari.
The general theme of INPUT 2012 is “Planning support tools: policy analysis, implementation and evaluation.”
After two decades characterized by the blooming of methods, technologies, and applications, researchers are now facing the complex issue of selecting, adapting, and integrating appropriate tools for specific stages and tasks in planning. New technologies play a prominent role in the innovation of planning theory and practice, as they affect every phase of the process: knowledge building, preliminary studies, design, decision, implementation, and monitoring.
Scholars and practitioners are invited to submit their contributions on innovative experiences within the framework of the general theme and in the light of cross-cutting technology domains, such as GIS, models, geo-visualization, and web 2.0.
Several presentations are now available on Slideshare.

INPUT is managed by an informal group of Italian academic researchers working in many fields related to the exploitation of informatics in planning. Since the first conference, held in 1999, INPUT has represented an opportunity to reflect on the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) as key planning support tools.
The first conference (Venice, 1999), titled “Models and management of processes of spatial transformations,” was organized by the IUAV University of Venice in conjunction with the Sixth Conference “Computers in Urban Planning and Urban Management” (CUPUM) and focused on the relations between three main topics as follows: new technologies, tools for analysis and forecast, planning and management of processes of spatial change. The conference laid the foundations for the setting up of a network of models designers, users, and clients.
The second conference (Isole Tremiti, 2001), titled “Democracy and technologies,” was organized by the Polytechnic University of Bari and proposed a discussion on three topics as follows: democracy and technologies, worlds and models; knowledge and intelligent agents.
